Property, plant and equipment (PPE), known as “assets” constitute a significant portion of higher education institutions’ total assets.  It is therefore important to keep proper records of the assets and to account for them accurately in the annual financial statements.  Alone, one could not address the challenges and changes facing the effective management of assets at Tertiary Institutions.  With the determination to find solutions the exciting process of creating the asset Management Committee was introduced.  The first conference of the Asset Management Committee was held in 1998, in Muldersdrift.  In attendance were persons responsible for asset management at Universities and Technikons.  During 2001 the organisation was re-named National asset Management Forum (NAMF).

The purpose was and still is to encourage the interchange of information and the sharing of knowledge with persons responsible for asset management. The Forum had steady growth and conferences were also attended by delegates from the Southern African Development Communities (SADC).

In 2009 the organisation was renamed; Asset Management Forum Southern Africa (AMF-SA).

The conference had become an annual event.
